If you look at the specifications of the stud welding systems, you will see that most of them can use several guns. For instance, with Capacitor Discharge (CD) stud welding there are two methods that are used, gap and contact. The gap method produces better welds on some applications but may be difficult to set up initially. The contact method works well on most applications and is easy to set up, however it may not weld as well as a gap system on some materials. Most CD systems support both contact and gap methods. Also, there are other options such as a mechanical lift gun or an electronic lift gun.
